I’m new to coaching and I want it to be a positive experience. I don’t want to be stuck in the past in ‘analysis paralysis’. How do I know my coach is going to be motivating?
Powerful coaching raises a spectrum of positive emotions.
Deciding to work with a coach is like getting a fresh pair of eyes and appreciating nuances and colours that you have missed. But apart from the insights, there is an emotional component to solving dilemmas with a coach.
Relief. It is liberating to decide that you can address your challenges and goals through discussion. Sharing your thoughts with a professional who listens objectively will dampen any stress and enhance your well-being.
Calming. It is likely your thoughts have been going round like clothes in a tumble drier. The act of telling your coach about your situation or aspiration enhances your sense of purpose. A weight is lifted from your mind when you put your thoughts ‘out there’ in a trustful and confidential environment, as opposed to them sapping energy ‘in here’.
Listened to. For many of us, being really listened to is a rare experience. We are always working against the clock, the politics, the expectations. The opportunity to pause, reflect and reconsider is infrequent. When some one listens to you non-judgmentally, it frees up your thinking, apart from feeling good. It helps you on the way to new insights, and gives you options and solutions.
Motivated. Good coaching switches your mindset from the drama of your current situation to a focus on your aspirations and plans. It is likely that a coaching session will complete with agreed actions and the feeling of purpose and control, which will feed your motivation.
Supported. The adage goes ‘a problem shared is a problem halved.’ Sharing your thoughts in a confidential and trusting conversation can be therapeutic in itself. A coach will support you in unblocking barriers, gaining new insights and providing you with appreciative and open feedback.
Of course, depending on the issues you discuss, there is no guarantee that you will not experience some frustration, or regret, or even unhappiness. It is part of your coach’s job discuss enough information to understand the context, but not dwell on the past. The focus is on the future, your vision, goals and plans. Opening yourself to working with a coach will enhance your well-being and forward your aspirations. A coaching conversation is an uplifting experience.
